Tips & Documents

  • Documents for your wedding

New Zealand is one of the easiest countries to get married.

All couples wishing to marry in New Zealand must apply for a marriage license from the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs, Births, Deaths, Marriages (BDM). This can be done ONLINE https://www.govt.nz/browse/family-and-whanau/getting-married/get-a-marriage-licence/

For overseas couples: 'Notice of intend marriage where both parties ordinarily resident outside New Zealand BDM 58'.

You will be asked for your personal data, choice of ceremony (personlised ceremony), the name of the celebrant and the location of the ceremony. It is important to note that two locations must be specified when applying. The outdoor location and the alternative location in case of bad weather. This marriage license can be sent directly to the Celebrant. It usually takes three days for the license to be issued. The license is valid for three months.

Together with the marriage licence, two copies of the document 'Copy of Particulars of Marriage' are sent to the celebrant. These documents are signed at the ceremony by the wedding couple, the witnesses and the celebrant. One copy is given to the wedding couple and the other copy is sent by the celebrant to BDM to have your marriage registred in New Zealand. For the registration of your marriage in your home country a certificate of marriage must be applied from BDM and presented to the registrar office at your home country.

German, Austrian and Swiss travelers need a valid passport for their entry, which is still valid for at least 3 months after the end of their stay. No visa is required. Since 2019, however, an NZeTA has to be applied for as an electronic entry permit before leaving for New Zealand. https://nzeta.immigration.govt.nz

  • Best travel time for New Zealand

As New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to those in Europe. Summer in New Zealand is from December to March. The peak season is from mid-December to early February. This is when New Zealand schools have their summer holidays. As many New Zealanders holiday in their own country, it is advisable to book accommodation and activities well in advance.

  • Rent a car in New Zealand

If you are hiring a car, please note that you will need an international driver's licence or your driver's licence together with a certified english translation. In New Zealand, cars drive on the left hand side of the road.
